KALASIN: A murder suspect was found hanged with a towel inside a detention cell at the Muang police station on Sunday morning. He was believed to have committed suicide, police said.

Police said the man, Thongkham Phuthaddok, 55, had fled into a rice field and threatened to take his own life after shooting a woman, Suksom Thansawai, 48, to death with a handgun.

He was arrested on Saturday afternoon and brought to the police station where he was detained in a cell pending further legal action.

Thongkham was found dead inside the detention cell on Sunday morning. He was hanging from an iron bar with a blue towel.

Pol Lt Col Suthep Pukanha, the station's deputy chief investigator, said that surveillance camera footage showed Thongkham woke up at about 6am. He went into the toilet before returning to sit alone in the cell. He was found dead about 20 minutes later at a spot not covered by the camera.

The body was sent to Kalasin Hospital for an autopsy.
