PHRAE: Two men were arrested and about 5 million methamphetamine pills seized on Saturday in Song district of this northern province after a car chase, Pol Gen Chalermkiat Srivorakhan said at a press conference on Sunday.

At 11.30am on Saturday, police manning a temporary drug checkpoint on a road along an irrigation canal near Ban Huay Mai tried to stop a Ford pick-up for a search, but the vehicle sped away in the direction of a Yom river crossing at Ban Tha Sai, prompting the police to give chase.

The vehicle was later found abandoned near the village. After radio contact with the Song police station, two suspects were later apprehended: Surachai Songtisaichok, 24, of Tak's Phop Phra district, and Sompong Takthanachuchai, 24, of Tak's Um Phang district. The other suspect managed to escape.

In a search of the Ford pick-up, police found 35 bags containing about 5 million speed pills.

The suspects were charged with having illicit drugs in possession with intent to sell.
