PATTAYA: A young Lao woman was arrested on Friday for abandoning her newborn in front of someone's house, after the Japanese father ended their relationship without knowing she was pregnant.

Police detained Paphay Viengsanga, 20, at a food shop on Soi Arunothai, nor far from the house on Soi 12 of Pattaya 3 Road where she abandoned her week-old baby on Sunday.

Re-united with the child, she admitted leaving the baby by the house gate, but said she really could not afford to raise it.

She told police she worked at a local beer bar and had struck up a relationship with a Japanese businessman, who had visited her every two weeks. She called the 35-year-old man "J".

The three-month relationship ended seven months ago. He dumped her and returned to Japan. Two months later she realised she was pregnant.

She did not know how to raise the child and did not consult anyone else because she had overstayed her visa. She had given birth in a toilet on Nov 22.

Ms Paphay said she placed the baby in front of the house, hoping the house owner would adopt it.

Police charged her with abandoning a young child and overstaying her visa.

The child has been placed in the care of social workers.
