Long jail terms in KMIT funds theft case, ex-rector acquitted

Sentences of 4-50 years in jail have been handed down to 11 people for the embezzlement of hundreds of millions of baht from King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL).

The former rector was acquitted.

Min Buri Court began delivering its 572-page ruling at 8am on Tuesday. It took 17 hours to read out, finishing about 1am on Wednesday, the court's longest judgement ever.

Public prosecutors pressed charges of embezzlement, document forgery, money-laundering, aiding in embezzlement and malfeasance between 2012 and 2014.

The case involved the theft of 689 million baht from KMITL and the laundering of 303 million baht. All defendants denied the charges. All were present at the court to hear the ruling. 

Songklot Sriprasong, 43, former manager of Siam Commercial Bank's  Big C Suwintawong branch, was found guilty of theft, document forgery and money-laundering and sentenced to 193 years and eight months in jail. The term was commuted to 145 years and three months because he gave useful testimony.  The actual term was capped at 50 years. The court also ordered him to repay money to KMITL and SCB.

Amporn Noisamrit, 59, former finance director of KMITL, was found guilty of malfeasance. Her jail term was commuted from 203 years to 152 years and three months. Her final term was also capped at 50 years. She was also ordered to repay KMITL and SCB.

Nine others were found guilty of money-laundering and sentenced to prison terms ranging from 4-24 years.

They are: Poonsak Boonsawat, 30, facing nine years in jail; Janjira Sopradit, 30, four years and six months; Radom Matthujad, 58, 13 years and six months; Jariwat Sahaporn-udomkan, 35, nine years; Sappasit Limnorarat, 54, former assistant rector of KMITL, 24 years and nine months; Saloot Ratchaburi, 57, nine years; Kittisak Matthujad 20 years; Sompong Sahaporn-udomkan four years and six months; and Tawatchai Yimcharoen four years and six months. Sappasit was also ordered to repay KMITL and SCB.

The court acquitted Thawil Phuengma, 64, former rector of KMITL, Phada Buakhao, 31, and Sombat Sopradit, 47.

After hearing the judgement, Mr Thawil smiled and said he was grateful for receiving justice from the court and he was ready to defend himself in another case of embezzlement and malfeasance in the Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases.

The court released him on bail of 8 million baht and prohibited him from leaving the country without prior permission.
