A 41-year-old police captain was arrested and then sacked for theft from a colleague's car and from police headquarters in Bangkok on Saturday morning.

Pol Capt Ekachai Pengjan, a deputy inspector-general at the Central Investigation Bureau, was caught breaking into the Honda car of Pol Cpl Anusorn Busababan, also of the CIB, in a car park inside the compound of the Royal Thai Police Office in Pathumwan district, Thai media reported.

Police said Pol Cpl Anusorn found the suspect at his car, stealing a spare wheel, sneakers, boots and amulets about 5am.

Pol Capt Ekachai confessed to the crime and also admitted he had just stolen computers and appliances from the fourth floor of Building 6 in the Royal Thai Police Office compound. The stolen goods were in his pickup truck, which was parked near Pol Cpl Anusorn's car.

Pol Col Phopthorn Jitman, chief of Pathumwan station, was quoted as saying the suspect was charged with theft.

Deputy police spokesman Pol Col Krisana Patanacharoen said Pol Capt Ekachai was immediately dismissed from the force.
