One of two men wanted for the armed holdup of an armoured cash delivery van and theft of 7.2 million baht in Bangkok’s Nong Khaem district on Saturday night has been arrested.

Jirayut Suanmi, 20, was apprehended on Phetkasem Road on Wednesday and taken to his house in Bang Bon, where officers found a black bag containing a large amount of cash, Thai media reported on Thursday.

During interrogation, Mr Jirayut allegedly confessed to having colluded with another man, allegedly Thakdanai Niewrangjai, 27, in robbing a Brink's security van on Feb 23. After the holdup, they divided the money in Bang Bon area.

Poice were hunting down Mr Thakdanai.

Manager Online reported that Mr Jirayut confessed he and Mr Thakdanai had earlier robbed a cash delivery van operated by the same security firm in 2017 and made off with about 6 million baht. They had not been caught.

National police chief Chakthip Chaijinda and senior police officers jointly interrogated Mr Jirayut at Nong Khang Plu police station in Nong Khaem district on Thursday morning.

The robbery occurred about 7.50pm in front of a Big C superstore on Phetkasem road as two employees of Brink’s Security (Thailand) carried a bag containing the cash from a branch of Siam Commercial Bank to their armoured security van.

Employee Chaiyut Somngam, 31, told police he and Somyos Bukhunthes, 41, were at the rear of the van when two men pulled up on a motorcycle. The pillion rider produced a gun and fired one shot into the air, then demanded at gunpoint he drop the money bag to the ground, Mr Chaiyut said.

The motorcycle driver picked it up, the pillion rider fired another shot into the air and the two men sped off.
