SAMUT PRAKAN: A man from Myanmar was stabbed to death by a female compatriot who said he attempted to assault her as she prepared to take a bath in her apartment on Saturday morning.

The man, identified only as Nai, 20, was found dead in a pool of blood inside the room on the third floor of the Wanna apartment building in tambon Bang Sao Thong, said Pol Capt Kiarttisak Kerdchoke, a deputy investigation chief at the Bang Sao Thong police station, who received the report at 7.20am.

The man had sustained a stab wound to his left chest. A bloodstained knife, about six centimetres long, was found in the middle of the room, where there were signs of a struggle, said police.

The 21-year-old Myanmar woman, the tenant of the apartment, was waiting inside the room and appeared frightened. She told police through an interpreter that she was about to take a bath before going to work at an auto parts factory nearby shortly before the incident.

She said she was wearing a wrap to cover her body when someone knocked on her door. She assumed it was her elder sister who lived in the room opposite hers.

But when she opened the door, she said the man pushed her inside and grabbed her in an attempt to sexually assault her. She resisted, but he pushed her down to the floor. She saw a knife nearby, grabbed it and stabbed him in the chest before running outside to seek help from her sister.

The man had knocked on the door of her room the previous night to ask for someone, said the woman. As she did not know him and he looked suspicious, she did not reply and immediately closed the door, she told police.

A friend of the deceased said the man had been staying with him in a room on the second floor of the same building for about one week. On Saturday morning, his compatriot left the room and did not say where he was going, said the friend.

Police are examining closed-circuit television camera footage to learn more. The woman and other witnesses were taken to the police station for further questioning.
