Paew Yiang Tai Foundation, a non-profit rescue agency in Sri Racha district in Chon Buri, posted pictures of the ambulance on its Facebook account on Tuesday - and the mainstream media rapidly made the Doraemon-themed vehicle a star.

"The ambulance of one of the volunteer rescuers is decorated so prettily that every patient will feel less stress," the foundation wrote.

The ambulance belongs to Nirand Leesuwan, who has volunteered on rescue missions for more than 20 years.

He said on Wednesday he had spent around 40,000 baht to transform the plain van into the world of the magic cat. The money came from his own savings, he added.

"I want to return good things to society and to see patients and their family members relaxed when they are on board," Mr Nirand said. "Some even take pictures of the van on the way to hospital."
