NAN: Three monks including an abbot in this northern province are facing charges of sodomising teenage boys in cases that police say began six years ago.

Phrasamu Udon Shinwangso, the deputy abbot of Wat Phayawat in Muang district, has been charged with taking minors under age 15 for molestation and molesting children aged under 15. He would be defrocked, said Pol Col Prayoon Chamnankong, chief of the Muang district police station.

The officer added that police in Phu Phiang and Wiang Sa districts were preparing to press similar charges against Phrakhru Kittinantapreecha, the abbot of Wat Shae Phlang in Phu Phiang, and Phra Phisutthisak of Wat Lab Muentai in Wiang Sa.

Pol Col Prayoon said the charges followed complaints made by male siblings aged 19 and 15. They alleged that Phra Phisutthisak had known them via Facebook and had paid them for sex at his temple on five occasions starting six years ago. The last such encounter was said to have taken place in mid-2017 with the younger boy.

Phrakhru Kittinantapreecha is alleged to have paid for sex services twice late last year, and Phrasamu Udon Shinwangso was accused of having sex with the younger boy twice at his temple this year, the officer said.
