Driver has seizure, hits motorcyclists, 2 killed

PATTAYA -- Two people were killed and 15 others injured when a 44-year-old man suffered a seizure while driving a pickup truck and crashed into motorcycles taking students to school on South Pattaya Road on Monday morning.

Police and rescue workers were called to the accident scene in front of Tukcom Pattaya building about 7am.

They found a damaged pickup, damaged motorcycles and several injured people, mostly students and their parents, lying on the road. Two people were dead. A Pomeranian dog had also been killed, its head cut off.

Police had to surround and usher Akaradej Udomrat, the 44-year-old pickup driver, away from the scene as he was being attacked by angry people.

Appearing completely baffled, Mr Akaradej told police he was driving on the road when he suddenly lost consciousness. Only after he came to did he realise the extent of the wreck he had caused. He told police that he suffers from epilepsy.

Police tested him for alcohol, and the result was negative.

Despite his claims of illness, police said Mr Akaradej would still face legal charges.

Of the 15 injured people, nine were sent to Pattaya Memorial Hospital, four to Pattaya City Hospital, and two to Bangkok Hospital Pattaya. The two dead victims had not been identified. They were taken to Banglamung Hospital.
