NAKHON SAWAN: The body of a man missing after a family restaurant and adjoining house tumbled into the Chao Phraya River in Phayuha Khiri district late on Thursday night was found on Friday afternoon.

The riverside Tor Rung restaurant in tambon Phayuha collapsed around 10pm and the family's house, next to the restaurant, fell into the river an hour later.

One man was reported missing afterwards, the proprietor's younger brother Chiew Vorapantrakul, 59.

His body was found trapped in the restaurant's wreckage about 2pm, police said on Friday.

Restaurant owner Piyanut Sae Lim, 68, said she and her family had lived in the house for over 30 years.

There had been some cracks in the house, but they had never thought it would collapse.

There were no customers at the time. Only her brother Chiew, who was at the back of the restaurant.

District chief Preecha Plabnoi said the structure of the houses at this old riverside community were not strong. Over recent months level of the Chao Phraya River had quickly risen and then quickly fallen.

This had probably eroded the bank, leading to the collapse of the restaurant and the house.

Residents of 12  other houses and seven other restaurants along the riverbank were being evacuated for fear their houses might also collapse, he said.

On Friday they were seen hurrying to move their belongings out and going to stay with relatives.

Police were investigating.
