Crackdown on road control

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has launched a project to regulate the use of main roads and pavements across all 50 districts in Bangkok.

Speaking during a visit to Thepharak Road, the first road under the pilot project, in Bang Khen district on Tuesday, Bangkok deputy governor Chinnatat Meesuk said one main road in each city district will be chosen to take part in a project, called "5 Nos".

The five are: No parking or riding on pavements; no vending stalls which breach City Hall regulations; no erecting unauthorised billboards; no garbage; and no barriers or items to be placed that block pavements.

Pol Lt Gen Chinnatat said the project aimed to regulate and clean up selected roads across the city.

The scheme was devised in response to Bangkok governor Pol Gen Asawin Kwanmuang's policy which zeros in on the orderliness of all roads in the city.

District officials were instructed to keep the roads clean and tidy. A monthly assessment will also be conducted to evaluate the project performance of all districts.

The scheme will be expanded to other main roads soon after the implementation of the pilot project, Pol Lt Gen Chinnatat said.

City Hall said Thepharak Road was chosen for the project because it is a new road.

Pol Lt Gen Chinnatat said the road has not yet faced problems with encroachment by vending stalls.

Officials at City Hall said it will be an easier road to maintain and manage.

As for a waste management project, 25 garbage collection points were designated for Bang Khen district, of which 23 were set up along pavements.

The other two collection points were located near community canals, Pol Lt Gen Chinnatat said.
