Bridge collapses after barge tug collision

A bridge spanning the Tha Chin River partially collapsed after a tug pulling soybean-laden barges ploughed into it in Nakhon Chaisi district in Nakhon Pathom early yesterday.

The boat struck the concrete bridge causing a 100-metre section to fall into the river near Wat Thaiyawat in tambon Khun Kaew. No one was injured.

The tug was pulling three barges fully loaded with soybeans destined for a cooking oil factory.

Officials who inspected the bridge estimated the damage at millions of baht. The bridge was built with 12-million-baht raised by local communities in 1995. The tug was driven by Sumet Thappundee, 37.

Engineers were assessing damage to the pillar which took the direct hit.

Mr Sumet said a problem with the boat's rudder caused the boat to veer off course and slam into the pillar.

Prasart Rubpornpra, chairman of the Thaiyawat tambon administrative organisation, said signs were put up to warn other boat users about debris in the water.

Other boats have been called in to ferry people across the river while the bridge is closed. A local source said a new span may have to be built.
