The university cited the results which were announced by the University of Indonesia (UI) which conducts the ranking.

Mahidol was among a total of 619 international universities taking part in the UI index entitled "UI Green Metric World University Ranking 2017".

Participating universities were scored for their performance in six areas, including being environmentally friendly, their setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water use, transport management and education, Mahidol University said.

Seeing the importance of developing itself into a green campus, in 2008 Mahidol began implementing its master plan to become an environmentally friendly university, said the university, adding that the plan was developed out of an idea to create an ideal campus that is not only liveable but also promotes good health.

Under the plan, up to 70% of the university's space is designated as a green zone and a variety of activities and projects have been organised to demonstrate how energy and the environment can be preserved, the university said.

The university has also been dedicating itself as a model for surrounding communities to learn from its efforts to conserve energy and the environment, the university said.

A total of 27 universities in Thailand took part in the the UI index. Chulalongkorn University, was ranked 90th, Kasetsart University 96th, Rambhai Barni Rajabhat University 122nd, and Naresuan University 143rd.

Wageningen University and Research Centre in the Netherlands, meanwhile, emerged as the world's greenest university in this year's index, Mahidol University said.
