5 killed in Ratchaburi van-trailer crash

RATCHABURI: Five people were killed and five others injured when a van carrying them to a ceremony to pay respects to their ancestors crashed head-on with a trailer truck in Ban Pong district around noon on Saturday.

The fatal crash occurred at the Huay Raeng intersection on the Lukkae-Huay Krabok Road in tambon Krabyai at around 12.30pm, said Pol Lt Col Prasert Phudti, deputy investigation chief at the Krabyai police station.

The force of the crash killed three people in the van instantly. Seven others were badly hurt. All were trapped in the wreckage and rushed to a nearby hospital. Two were pronounced dead shortly afterward, bringing the number of the dead to five.

The five dead victims, two men and three women, were Pol Sub Lt Payut Namwongchai, 54; Mrs Suprapa Namwongchai, 54; Ms Chatporn Namwongchai; Sombat Or-ngam, 44; and Mrs Srida Singchai, 45.

Injured were the van driver Sanchart Singhai, 55, Mrs Onprapa Or-ngam, Ms Naen Or-ngam, Mrs Peerapa Saraphi and a boy identified only as Thana.

Not far from the van, the trailer truck was found overturned on the road with gravel scattered across the area. Driver Panya Ravivet, 32, was awaiting police at the scene.

Officers were continuing their investigation.
