Ministry discussing plan to build 2 research satellites

The Ministry of Science and Technology is looking into building two satellites for research and observation purposes, at an estimated cost of 1 billion baht.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha wants Thailand to have its own satellites and facilities to observe the world with, Minister of Science and Technology Suwit Maesincee said at a seminar on Thursday.  

“Building the two satellites would push Thailand forward in many ways. They would help develop our understanding of agriculture, and with education and ensure interconnectivity of information between ministries," Mr Suwit said.

“The prime minister wants to encourage more young people to work in the fields of science and technology,  as there is great demand for that in our country.

"The ministry has plans for a regional science convention and other events, with an available budget of 8 billion baht.”

The director of the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency Anon Sanitwong Na Ayutthaya said the two satellites would cost around 1 billion baht to build.
