NAKHON RATCHASIMA: The body of a Customs Department official was found by divers from a rescue unit in Lam Takhong canal in Si Khiu district early on Sunday, police said.

The search was launched at about 6.50am after police were informed that Kanok Supachaiveerakul, 59, chief of the 3rd Customs Service Section, had gone missing and the police sought help from the Si Khiu-based Huk 31 Rescue Unit.

Friends and relatives of the deceased man said Kanok, from Nonthaburi's Muang district, had bought land and built a house near a canal at Ban Nong Han in tambon Nong Ya Khao, where he regularly spent the weekends.

At about 2am on Sunday, they found that Kanok had disappeared from the house. They went out to look for him, but found only a pair of sandals on the bank of the canal, prompting them to inform the police later in the morning.

The divers found Kanok's body about 30 minutes into the search. The body was sent to Si Khiu Hospital for an autopsy.

Police were investigating the cause of Kanok's death.
