KANCHANABURI: A municipality in Sangkhla Buri district has been urged to install security cameras at a popular campsite where an increasing number of thefts are being reported by visitors.

Pol Lt Thanasak Opas, deputy chief of Sangkhla Buri police, on Monday called on local authorities to provide better safety for tourists at the viewpoint camping ground.

He said there had been a number of thefts there recently.

The latest was on Monday when Aranya Suksujit and Natthawut Tinnaworn filed complaints at the police station.

Ms Aranya reported she had lost 1,800 baht in cash and two mobile phones overnight and Mr Natthawut said he found 5,000 baht in cash missing when they woke up this morning and found their tent had been burgled.

Pol Lt Thanasak said patrolling police did visit the campsite, but it was an open area making it prone to theft.

He wanted the tambon Wang Ka municipality to install security cameras and hire guards to safeguard the location for tourists.

The camping ground is provided by the municipality for visitors to the border town in Sangkhla Buri district. It is popular as the location is by the Songkalia River and the scenic Uttamanusorn Bridge, better known as Saphan Mon -- the world's second longest wooden bridge after the Uben Bridge in Myanmar.

The camping ground is popular as visitors can see Uttamanusorn Bridge, better known as Saphan Mon, from there.
