SA KAEO: Two Cambodian illegal workers were killed and 13 others hurt when the pickup truck they were travelling in veered off the road and overturned in Aranyaprathet district early on Friday.

The fatal crash occurred on the bypass road opposite Wat Pa Khao Suankwang forest temple in tambon Ban Mai Songsai, and was reported to police about 5.30am, said Pol Lt Col Chaiya Maneesut, investigation chief at Aranyaprathet.

Police and rescue workers reported a man and a woman were found dead and trapped in the overturned vehicle. Thirteen others - eight men, four women and a girl - were injured and rushed to a nearby hospital.

All were illegal workers from Cambodia. No travel documents were found on them, police said. The driver, a Thai woman, fled, Thai media reported.

Police investigators learned they had sneaked across the border into Ta Phraya district and were en route to jobs in central Pathum Thani province.

The driver had picked them up around 4.30am. Each migrant paid her 2,200 baht.

Police said the pickup appeared to have been travelling at high speed when the driver lost control and crashed. They were tracking her down. The vehicle was new and had red Sa Kaeo licence plates.
