Rangers at Western Thungyai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary promise to continue protecting the forest, buoyed by public praise for the team for arresting the very rich big boss of Italian-Thai Development Plc (ITD) and his party.

"Thank you for all the support," they posted a Facebook message. "Everyone here is determined to do their best to protect the forest."

The Facebook page shows a photo of 13 rangers. The post reminds readers that more than 200 officials are in the team based in Thong Pha Phum district in Kanchanaburi.

Their leader Wichien Chinnawong has been praised for arresting ITD president Premchai Karnasuta and three companions on Sunday night for alleged hunting of protected animals, undeterred by the fact he is an influential, well-known businessman.

Mr Wichien was is in Bangkok on Friday for meetings with senior officials and police investigating the high-profile case.

He said on Thursday that credit should be given to the 200 park officials working alongside him to save the World Heritage forest.

"I cannot do it alone. There are around 200 officials working at Thungyai. Please don't forget them, too," he said.
