NAKHON SI THAMMARAT: A 77-year-old man was killed when his motorcycle was hit by an oncoming SUV on Highway 41 in Tham Phannara district on Sunday morning, police said.

Pol Lt Samphan Wattanasong, a Tham Phannara duty police officer, said the accident happened at about 8.30am on a south-bound lane of Highway 41 near Village Group 6 in tambon Tham Phannara when the motorcycle suddenly cut in front of the Toyota Fortuner from the road median.

The man, Samran Khahawong, a herb planter, was killed instantly. He suffered serious head injuries and a broken ribcage. His left leg was cut off.

Chaiwat Deecharoen, the SUV driver, said he was driving at about 120 kilometres per hour taking his father to see a doctor at the Prince of Songkla Univerity Hospital. His mother and three other relatives were also in the vehicle. The SUV dragged the man's body about 60 metres from the point of impact.

After the accident, Mr Chaiwat, the owner of an oil palm plantation, called the police and surrendered to them on their arrival.

Mr Chaiwat was initially charged with reckless driving that caused the elderly's death. He was temporarily released on bail to take his father to see the doctor.
