Rabies alert in Bangkok's Suan Luang area

The Livestock Development Dept on Friday announced a rabies alert zone centred on Soi On Nut 36 in Bangkok's Suan Luang district after a dead dog tested positive for the lethal disease.

Deputy director-general Jeerasak Pipatanapongsopon said the zone covered a 5-kilometre radius from house number 732 on Soi On Nut 36.

No animals or their carcasses can be moved outside the zone. Veterinarians will take swift action against any other infected animals found in the area, and those suspected of infection, to control the disease.

Mr Jeerasak said the dog was hit by a vehicle in Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan on March 4 and an animal lover took it for treatment. The dog was then taken to the house on March 15.

It became aggressive on March 17 and bit a local resident. The dog was taken to a clinic on Monday and died on Tuesday. A test confirmed it was infected with rabies. There were four more dogs at the same house.

Rabies control zones remained in place in 25 provinces on Friday. The disease has so far killed six people this year, 11 last year and 13 in 2016.
