A Bruneian woman who drowned in Krabi on Wednesday was not a member of the sultanate's royal family, as speculated in some media reports, a police spokesman said on Friday.

Police had checked with the Thai embassy in Banda Seri Begawan, Brunei's capital, deputy police spokesman Krissana Pattnacharoen said.

The woman was identified as PG HJH Jamilah PG JJ Othman. She lost consciousness while swimming off Ao Nang in Krabi's Muang district on Wednesday. She was wearing a buoancy jacket at the time.

The woman, who was on holiday with her husband, received first aid and was taken to First Standard Clinic  and later Krabi Hospital, where she was declared dead.

An autopsy at Krabi Hospital concluded drowning was the cause of death.

Some media reports claimed she was a member of the Brunei royal family because of the first two letters, PG, of her name.

Pol Col Krissana said the Thai embassy confirmed that was not the case.

Her body was being returned to Brunei for religious rites, the deputy spokesman said.
