Cops swoop after assault broadcast live

Police rescued a woman being viciously assaulted as the attack was broadcast live on social media.

Officers Sunday night broke into an apartment in Bangkok's Bung Kum district while the woman was being assaulted by her boyfriend.

The assault was watched live by several viewers who called police to report the attack. The coverage showed the man threatening to kill the woman.

Police traced the broadcast to the condominium where the attack was happening.

The woman, who sustained severe bruises, was rushed to hospital and was reported to be in a critical but stable condition.

The man, identified as Chaichana Sirichart, an administrator for the Global Fx Investment Facebook page, has been detained. An investigation is under way.

Officials decided to break into the room after Mr Chaichana refused to let the woman go, or allow authorities inside.

Bung Kum police station deputy superintendent Pipat Tengtaworn said the man allowed a rescue worker to enter the room to give basic aid to the woman before police entered.

The broadcast of the assault came a few days after a man in Samut Prakan shot himself dead in a condo car park while streaming live on Facebook after his girlfriend broke up with him.

Napat Kullapachayakarn, 37, of Suphan Buri, died from a bullet wound to his forehead.
