PRACHIN BURI: Unhappy householders are pointing their collective finger at the Provincial Electricity Authority after a huge power surge following a blackout blew out and ruined all their electrical appliances.

Five villagers from Phai Dam village in Ban Sang district have complained to police and the local PEA branch office , demanding the officials responsible for the malfunction compensate them for the damage.

One of them, Thepharit Sirirat, said the incident occurred after heavy rain caused a blackout in his village on Tuesday. The PEA turned the power back on around midnight, but "the current was far too high", Mr Thepharit said.

A refrigerator and 11 fluorescent lights in his two houses were burnt out. Fresh eggs stored in one refrigerator were left charred and blackened.

His neighbours had similar problems, reporting dead TVs and fans.

Natthawadi Suanchit said she saw smoke coming from an air conditioner before it shut down.

The villagers said the PEA was investigating the cause of the problem.
