Campaigners opposed to the judicial housing estate at the foot of Doi Suthep mountain started putting up the green flags in Chiang Mai on Monday as part of their campaign for the demolition of the houses.

The flags were installed at six landmark locations in the northern city, including Chang Phuak gate and Nawarat bridge over the Ping River. They bore the message "until the demolition".

The latest move comes as 52 civic networks protest over the slow progress of a plan to close down the compound.

The government and the civic groups agreed at a meeting on May 6 to the removal of 45 houses and nine flats built for residential use.The area will be reforested and returned to Doi Suthep-Pui National Park.

The premises were built as part of the new Administrative Office of Appeal Region 5, in Mae Rim district, on land belonging to the Treasury Department. The office's three condominiums and working buildings will be allowed to stay.

The government has stopped short of saying they will be flattened, but the activists and their supporters demand they be taken down.

The only progress since the crucial meeting in Chiang Mai has been a survey of the land by the department on May 10, to fence off the area to be given back to the park.

Network coordinator Teerasak Roopsuwan said on Monday the green flags will not be put away until demolition work starts.

The networks held talks with the 33rd Army Circle on Monday about a plan to begin reforesting the area this coming Sunday.
