UDON THANI: A Pitbull owner has been fined and ordered to chain his two pets after they mauled another dog to death.

Pol Col Tharathip Chaiyarin, the deputy chief of Nong Wua So police station, on Monday slapped a fine of 5,000 baht on Som Huadorn for failing to keep dangerous animals under control.

The charge followed an incident on Friday when two Pitbull dogs -- Suea and Blury -- attacked Burdy, a Thai breed owned by Boon Krajompol, who is a neighbour of Mr Som at Ban Khok Phak Hom in Nong Wua So district.

Burdy was seriously injured by the bites and succumbed to death the next morning. The attack was recorded and posted on the Watchdog Thailand Facebook page and drew criticism from commentators who directed their anger toward the owner.

"I tried in vain to stop and separate them," Mr Som said when he and Mrs Boon were called to the police station.

Despite the death of her dog, Mrs Boon had no intention of lodging a complaint to police or pressing charges against her neighbour. "We are neighbours. I raised my dog and loved him. But I don't want to have legal problems with people in the same village. I really can't do that," she said.

But the amicable end of the dog attack did not mean the Pitbull owner was allowed to walk free. Pol Col Tharathip said Mr Som had violated Section 377 of the Criminal Code regarding the control of dangerous animals.

He was also ordered to chain and muzzle the two Pitbull dogs to keep them from attacking others.

Pol Co Tharathip warned the owner of further legal action if he ignores the order.
