PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN: Two men men with a yearning for the toothsome but now very pricey Monthong durian stole two of them from a roadside shop in downtown Hua Hin, but were in such a hurry to get away they dropped one.

The theft was reported at King of Fruits Hua Hin shop, on a railway road in Hua Hin municipal area, about 9pm on Wednesday, Pol Col Ronnachai Chopkha, duty officer at Hua Hin police station, said.

Shop owner Ekkaphol Kerdlamchiak, 39, told police that two men wearing full-face crash helmets arrived on a red motorcycle. The pillion rider came into his shop, snatched up two Monthong durians and ran back to the waiting motorbike, carrying one in each hand by the stem.

Unfortunately, for the pillion rider, but luckily for the vendor, the thief was unable to handle the two  durians. The stem on one of them broke and it fell onto the road. The thief was left holding only the biggest one as they fled the scene.

The durian owner said the stolen fruit weighed 5-6kg and was worth over 1,000 baht.

If the thieves had told him they really wanted to eat durian, he would have given them some to try. They went about it the wrong way, Mr Ekkaphol said.

The theft was recorded by a security camera. Police were investigating.
