TRAT: A Cambodian crew member electrocuted on board a fishing vessel off Koh Chang died as a navy-led rescue team was trying to save his life on Saturday morning.

The Cambodian, identified only as Jao, 25, was on board the Wor Pornthaweesap fishing trawler when he was electrocuted about 15 nautical miles off Chang island.

After learning about the electrocution on the fishing boat, the navy immediately sent HTMS Thai Muang from Trat to pick up the injured man, said Cdr Suebsan Rianroo, commander of a Trat-based navy unit after being alerted at around 6am.

It took the rescue team one hour to reach the fishing vessel, about 15 nautical miles (28km) from the shore, and transfer the man to the patrol ship.

Lt Detnarong Phiewruang, a naval physician, checked the injured man’s condition and was unable to find his pulse. The physician then administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) while navy officers coordinated with a Trat rescue team to send the man to a hospital.

The navy vessel later took the injured crewman to the navy port in Trat, where the rescue team was waiting. The rescue team again performed CPR  before sending him to Laem Ngop Hospital for treatment at around 8.15am. However, doctors could not find his pulse.

The boat owner, who declined to be named, said that his vessel left a pier in Laem Ngop district on Friday and Mr Jao was electrocuted at around 5am on Saturday. He and other crew members did not know the cause of the electrocution.

Authorities were investigating.
