Who's officially responsible for Victory Monument? Please stand up and report to City Hall.

Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has raised the puzzling question as it is planning to improve the monument's landscape.

Victory Monument was built in 1941 to commemorate 59 Thai soldiers, police and civilians who died during the Franco-Thai war stemming from border conflicts.

Deputy city clerk Sompong Wiengkaew said after a meeting with representatives from the Fine Arts Department on Monday that the City Planning Department had been assigned to check what unit was responsible for the monument with the Treasury Department of the Finance Ministry within a month.

Victory Monument is not the only landmark with the problem. Nobody seems to know which agencies are in charge of at least 15 important places including Democracy Monument on Ratchadamnoen Avenue and 39 ancient places registered with the Fine Arts Department from bridges to canals. Most of them are located in Phra Nakhon and Ratchathewi districts.

All are under the BMA's landscape improvement plan.

The BMA had made some improvements in the area around the landmarks as they are located in its jurisdiction, the official said.

The City Planning Department is ready to take charge of the landmarks unless other units come out to claim responsibility, he added.
