SONGKHLA: Another Irrawady dolphin was found dead in Krasae Sin district on Wednesday, the sixth to die in Lake Songkhla this year.

The dead female dolphin was washed ashore at Ban Laem Yang in tambon Koh Yai. It was 210 centimetres long, weighed about 120 kilogrammes and believed to have been dead for 5-7 days, according to Jamnong Klaicharoen, chief of the Thaleluang No-Hunting Area.

It was believed the dolphin drowned after becoming entangled in a fishing net.

The dead dolphin was one of the  small pod of Irrawady dolphins that live in Lake Songkhla - believed to be the only such school of its kind in Asia.

So far this year, six Irrawady dolphins have been found dead in the lake area. The previous one was discovered in tambon Lam Pam of Muang district in Phatthalung on June 14. A fishing net was again blamed.

Last year, four Irrawady dolphins were found dead in the lake, also believed to have drowned when trapped in fishing nets.
