CHIANG RAI: Artists from across the northern region have painted a large tableau on canvas at the Art Bridge Chiang Rai (ABCR) centre in Muang district commemorating the rescue of the 12 “Wild Boars” and their football coach.

Artist and ABCR president Suwit Jaipom revealed the painting on Friday. It is 3 metres x 13 metres, painted in sopia tones.

Titled "The Heroes", the giant canvas is a tribute to all who contributed to the achievement in safely extricating the 13 footballers from flooded Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district last week, 18 days after they were trapped in the cave labyrinth.

Work on the mural began at the art centre in tambon Ban Du last Saturday, with the participation of painters from Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Phayao and Lampang. (continues below)

The painting features the 13 footballers, along with Thais and foreigners who took part in the operation,  including former Navy Seal Lt Cdr Saman Gunanand who died during the mission, against a backdrop of the Tham Luang Khun Nam Nang Non Forest Park mountain range, which looks like a reclining woman from afar.

Mr Suwit said 99% of the artwork had been completed, with just the finishing touches remaining.

The giant canvas will be put on display at the ABCR, and later transferred to a new pavilion now under construction at the forest park. The structure is expected to be finished in about four months, he said.

The artwork also features the 12 Wild Boars team members and their coach, together with two psychologists, as seen during Wednesday's televised press conference. (Photo by Chinnapat Chaimol)
