CHACHOENGSAO: Road construction on rural road No.3001 (Chachoengsao-Onnut), currently being expanded from two to four lanes, has been blamed for a string of accidents resulting in deaths and injuries.

The latest crash occurred at about 3.40am on Sunday in front of the entrance to Wat Prawet Wattanaram temple in tambon Khlong Prawet in Ban Pho district when a motorcycle carrying two men ploughed into a pile of dirt and slammed into a power post.

Chaiyasit Minthip, 21, of Phetchabun province, was killed. The other man, who was yet to be identified, was seriously wounded. He was admitted to Ban Pho Hospital.

Pol Lt Col Veeraphan Som-in, a Saen Phu Dat police investigator, said villagers in the area recalled hearing the sound of the impact when the motorcycle hit the power post.

The villagers believed the two men were not familiar with the condition of the road, which has frequent diversions and piles of dirt, and is poorly illuminated at night. They said accidents happened frequently on this stretch of the road, leading to numerous casualties.
