Thailand has been chosen to host the Miss Universe pageant for the third time in December.

Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat said on Tuesday the Miss Universe Organisation decided to hold the 67th pageant in 2018 for the third time in Thailand.

The pageant will be held at Muang Thong Thani complex in Nonthaburi at 7am (local time) on Dec 17.

Mr Weerasak held a press conference at the Bangkok Art & Culture Centre about the organisers’ decision to choose Thailand as host of the pageant.

Miss Universe Organization president Paula Shugart and Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters were present at the briefing in Bangkok. Former Miss Universe 1965 Apasra Hongsakula and Miss Universe 2005 Natalie Glebova were also present during the announcement.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha welcomed the organisers’ choice, saying the government was willing to support the pageant. "Other countries would know more about Thailand as contestants would join activities at several places," he said.

Thailand hosted the 41st pageant in 1992, followed by the 54th in 2005. Two Thais were crowned Miss Universe: Apasara Hongsakula in 1964 and Porntip Nakhirunkanok in 1988.
