TRANG: Police are hunting for two suspects — one held for drugs and the other for attempted murder — who escaped from their cell in the provincial courthouse on Saturday afternoon.

The pair managed to escape shortly after police had taken them to the court building for detention, said Pol Lt Col Prasert Songsaeng, deputy investigation chief at the Muang district station, who was alerted at 2.30pm.

Vorawit Thaweesuwan, 22, of Yan Ta Khao district in the southern province, is a suspect in an attempted murder case. Klanarong Kongsuk, 26, of Muang district, was being held on a drug charge.

The duo were put in the cell but later fled by climbing to the roof and onto the pathway of the main court building. Closed-circuit television cameras captured the incident.

Police found the sandals of one suspect on the roof and began a manhunt for the fleeing pair.

Two hours later, relatives of Mr Klanarong contacted Pol Lt Col Prasert about arranging for his surrender. There was no trace of the other suspect. Police tried to contact Mr Vorawit’s relatives but failed to obtain any information about his whereabouts.
