SI SA KET: Fourteen sluice gates have been opened wider at Hua Na dam in Kanthararom district to release excess water from the reservoir, which is holding 7% more than its intended capacity, according to local officials.

The sluice gates are now open to the height of 10cm, up from 4cm last week, increasing the discharge rate to 100 cubic metres per second.

The dam is holding 69.585 million cubic metres of water, 7% above its manageable storage capacity of 64.98 million cubic metres. Heavy rainfall during July 24-30 led to a rise in the water level.

Panya Prachakul, chief of water allocation and irrigation system, said officials in charge of water management in the lower Moon river asked for more water to be released from Hua Na dam.

The Meteorological Department is forecasting more rain in the northeast early this week, which will raise the level of the Moon river. The stepped-up discharge rate will enable the dam to take in more water.

In its latest forecast on Monday morning, the Meteorological Department predicted rain from Aug 6-9 and isolated heavy downpours across the country, which could trigger burst riverbanks, runoff or mudslides.

At sea, ships are warned to proceed with caution and small boats are advised to stay ashore with strong winds and waves of  2-3 metres high forecast in the Andaman Sea and about 2 metres high in the upper Gulf.
