NAKHON PHANOM: Two hours of heavy rain caused flooding in That Phanom district town, home to the Phra That Phanom Pagoda on the Mekong River bordering Laos, on Sunday morning.
Many of the roads in the Tambon That Phanom Municipality were about 30 centimetres under water, causing heavy traffic congestion.
The area around the Phra That Phanom Pagoda was also flooded, prompting municipality officials to install pumps to drain water out into the Mekhong River.
The water level in the Mekong River itself was 12.70 metres high, only about 30cm below the rim of the bank, slowing the drainage efforts from the pagoda.
In low-lying tambon Nam Kam in That Phanom district, water from the Mekong River had overflowed to inundate several thousands of rai of farmland.
Tambon That Phanom Municipality mayor Kachornsak Nitchin said that municipality officials were monitoring the water situation around the clock.
