CHAIYAPHOUM: The mother of a 4-year-old girl feels devastated by the loss of her daughter, mauled to death by three pet dogs, but relieved the animals have been moved away from her neighbourhood.

Saowaree Chulkhwao said she felt a bit better after the owner of the pets had moved his dogs out of the neighbourhood following their fatal bites on her little girl. The current location of the four dogs was not disclosed.

The girl was bitten by three of four dogs owned by Piyanat Daengsoi while she was riding a bicycle fitted with training wheels with her elder brother in Ban Moo 2 in Ban Khwao district on Tuesday evening. The girl died on the way to Ban Khwao Hospital.

Her parents, family members, colleagues, officials and other mourners flocked to the district's Wat Pathumwas on Saturday to bid a final farewell to the girl in a cremation ceremony.

Her 6-year-old brother entered the monkhood as a novice to make merit for the girl.

The dog owner has promised to take full responsibility for the death. He was charged for failing to control his pets and negligence leading to the death of other persons. The maximum penalty for the two charges is a fine of 10,000 baht and/or a jail term of 10 years.

Mr Piyanat confessed to the charge before police at Ban Khwao police station.

The tragedy occurred as her family was preparing to celebrate the girl's fifth birthday on Sept 30.
