'Cyber army' boost as online threats grow

Newly appointed Supreme Commander Pornpipat Benyasri has vowed to strengthen the regime's "cyber army" to deal with online threats and terrorist plots faster.

The military unit should be able to "solve counter-terrorism problems within 30 minutes", Royal Thai Armed Forces (RTAF) spokesman Krit Chantharaniyom quoted Gen Pornpipat as saying yesterday. He didn't say what type of problems might fit the bill.

The new supreme commander called a meeting with 300 officers under the RTAF to announce his policies. The reinforcement of cyber security was among them.

The RTAF-based cyber army has mobilised experts to work on security issues in the cyber world. This type of army is as important as traditional forces because Thailand needs to prepare itself for new security threats, including the spectre of a "cyber war", Maj Gen Krit said.

Better training and competitions to test cyber knowledge are needed for the team, he said.
