Five immigration policemen at Don Mueang have been transferred pending the investigation into accused bribery.

Immigration police chief Surachate Hakparn posted on his Facebook an immigration official had allegedly demanded 200 baht each from tourists.

An initial investigation found the accusation had ground and he was transferred immediately.

His four direct supervisors were also moved pending an investigation whether they had a role in it.

The five policemen will face serious disciplinary and criminal action if found guilty.

The tough action came after Pol Maj Gen Surachate took over as chief of immigration police early this month. He wasted no time and put up “No tips” signs at immigration areas to inform tourists. Yet the alleged bribery took place.

Thai media reported a Chinese posted on Facebook his friend had to wait six hours to get a visa on arrival.

“The poster claimed the reason for the delay was because his friend did not pay immigration officials the extra 200 baht,” he said.

The general later told tourist police and Don Mueang immigration police to phone the poster to ask for more information that led to the transfer decision.
