Malaysian PM to visit Thailand

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad will visit Thailand and meet Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and Privy Council president Prem Tinasulanond late this month.

Mr Mahathir would meet Gen Prayut to discuss the southern peace process now Malaysia has replaced its negotiation facilitator, an informed source said.

Mr Mahathir would meet Gen Prem at his Si Sao Thewet residence. The two men had developed close ties when previously serving as prime minister of their respective countries and had kept in contact. Gen Prem referred to Mr Mahathir, 93, as his friend, the source said.

Gen Prem is 98 years old. His close aide, Gen Pisanu Phutthawong, said Gen Prem went to hospital regularly for a thorough medical checkup due to his age but he did not suffer any serious illness.

Gen Prem's legs were weak but he exercised with daily walks in the morning and evening.

The Privy Council had a meeting on Tuesday and Gen Prem had Gen Surayud Chulanont, a privy councillor, chair it on his behalf.
