NAKHON PATHOM: The concrete awning above the front of a seven-storey dormitory for female students opposite Silapkorn University’s Sanam Chandra Palace campus collapsed late Monday morning. Nobody was hurt.

The incident occurred at Thiwalai Village dormitory on Soi 1 opposite the university in Muang district, said Pol Cap Sutthiporn Klombanchong, a duty officer at Muang police.

Police, engineers from the Muang municipality and rescue workers found the awning above four row shops on the ground floor of the dormitory had collapsed. The collapsed awning was about 18 metres long and 1.5 metres wide.

The shops were a beauty salon, an ice cream shop and a coffee shop that occupied two rows.

Witness Sonthaya Pusitchokchai, 43, a pancake seller working opposite the dormitory, told police that he heard a loud bang and suddenly saw the awning crash down around 10am on Monday. Luckily, nobody was walking past at the time. Students often walked there in the evening, he said.

Police planned to interrogate the owner of the private dormitory and the contractor hired to build it. Thai media reported that the awning was added after the dormitory was completed. The collapsed section was cordoned off pending examination.
