'SHAPE Asia' meet greets the world

Global Shapers Bangkok is organising 'SHAPE Asia-Pacific 2018' to raise awareness about sustainable lifestyles and promote a green revolution in the region.

Initiated by the World Economic Forum, the Global Shapers Community is a network of young people under the age of 30 working together to address local, regional and global challenges. With more than 7,000 members, the Global Shapers Community spans 369 cities in 171 countries.

In each city, members of Global Shapers create projects that address the needs of their community. Projects cover everything from responding to disasters, combating poverty, to fighting climate change and building inclusive communities.

The Bangkok Hub won this year's bid to host SHAPE Asia-Pacific 2018, in which 160 participants from Global Shapers' hubs across the region and the world will experience the city under the theme "The Green Evolution & Sustainable Lifestyle".

The event started on Friday and will finish on Sunday.

Aanas Ali, a member of the Global Shapers Bangkok Hub, said the event was organised with the goal to inspire, empower, and connect Shapers to maximise learning and exchange hands-on solutions to solve pressing sustainability issues.

"Sustainability has increasingly attracted the Bangkok Hub's interest as we continue to engage the public on the importance of the issue and how their personal lifestyle options have a direct impact on the communities we live in," he said.

SHAPE Asia-Pacific 2018 will engage participants in discussion relating to three themes: the future of food, sustainable cities, and blockchain and smart energy.

The programme will culminate with a session to translate learnings into actionable steps for Shapers to take back to their own hubs.

The event is sponsored by the Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage, ThaiBev, SPCG, Tesco Lotus and SIX Network.

ML Dispanadda Diskul, Chief Executive Officer of Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage, said at a time when the world's resources are being depleted faster than they can be replenished, adopting and promoting more sustainable ways of living that are in harmony with nature has never been more crucial.

The Mae Fah Luang Foundation supports young people in becoming advocates and agents of change for sustainable lifestyles in their communities around the world.

"People under the age of 30 are people who have the power to change the world, so it's important for us to empower them to play an active role in shaping local, regional and global agendas," he said.

The Global Shapers Bangkok Hub has been active since 2012 and has attracted more than 100 motivated and talented members who have led more than 20 activities in and around Bangkok.
