Prayut assures European leaders at summit that roadmap is being followed

The international community understands the country's roadmap to an election and hopes to see Thailand maintain its political stability, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said yesterday.

Speaking on his return from Belgium where he attended the 12th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit, Gen Prayut said he had told world leaders that a general election is coming and their response was positive.

"I've given assurances the election is on the way and they want us to keep the stability. Several countries are aware of progress and efforts the government has made," he said.

Gen Prayut, who recently launched himself into social media, updated his Facebook account upon his return with a message that there was no place like home.

Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai said yesterday the world community had not expressed any concerns about the roadmap to an election or the country's future political landscape. He said this reflected their confidence in the country.

"They are aware we have [policy] continuation, no matter who is in power. Moreover, this administration has adopted a 20-year strategic plan which has boosted foreign confidence further," he said.

Mr Don also said many countries had shown a greater interest in building partnerships with Thailand since Gen Prayut's remark that he may enter the political scene.

Deputy government spokesman Werachon Sukondhapatipak said Thailand had stressed the importance of multilateral cooperation as an agent for achieving sustainable growth at the ASEM.

The two-day summit in Brussels concluded on Friday and brought together leaders from 51 European and Asian countries under the theme of "Europe and Asia: Global Partners for Global Challenges".

Gen Prayut delivered a speech titled "Building the future together: Promoting inclusive growth and sustainable connectivity" and shared his ideas on international and regional issues.

According to Lt Gen Werachon, the Thai leader reiterated his belief in multilateral work and rules-based international order and suggested that multilateral cooperation should be rooted in mutual trust, mutual respect and mutual interest.

The prime minister urged the community to ensure rules keep up with the new challenges brought by disruptive technology and the transition to a digital economy while noting it was essential to equip citizens with proper knowledge and understanding of the looming changes.

Gen Prayut took the opportunity to confirm Thailand's preparedness to host the ASEM Seminar on Enhancing Human Capital for Sustainable Digital Connectivity next year and to assume the chairmanship of Asean.

The prime minister also reiterated his commitment to greater connectivity between Europe and Asia, especially in the area of maritime sustainability following the country's efforts in revamping the commercial fisheries sector.

According to Lt Gen Werachon, the prime minister also gave assurances the country's political roadmap remains intact.
