CHON BURI: A woman from the Philippines died after she was hit by a car while crossing a road in Pattaya City late on Monday night.

Police at Muang Pattaya police station were informed of the fatal accident about 12.30am on Tuesday.

Maria Rosario S. Paloma was hit by a car near the entrance to Soi Thep Prasit 9 in tambon Nong Prue and later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, police said.

A police investigation found the woman was with three other people who were crossing the road. The driver of an approaching car travelling at high speed honked his horn at them. The three other people stopped in the centre of the road but the victim ran to avoid the oncoming vehicle.

The car hit her and then the driver lost control and it ran into three other cars and a motorcycle parked on the side of the road, police said.

Rescuers tried to resuscitate the injured woman while rushing her to hospital, but were unable to save her life.

The driver of the car, identified as Ekkaphong Phibunrat, 37, was held for questioning.

Police were examining recordings from security cameras in the area to clarify what happened.
