The Thon Buri Criminal Court on Tuesday approved the detention for 12 days of a man arrested for killing his wife by pouring acid over her face.

Police brought Kamtan Singhanat, 50, a native of Lop Buri, to the court and opposed his bail, citing his tendency to escape. The officers sought the detention of the suspect from Nov 13-24 pending interrogation of seven more witnesses and the suspect’s fingerprint results.

According to the police request, the suspect had poured industrial-strength acid used at a foundry over the head and body of his wife, Chorlada Tarawan, 38, an employee of a shopping mall, while she was sleeping at her rented room in Bang Khunthian area, Bangkok at around 5am on Nov 9. The woman sustained serious injuries and later died. The suspect had fled before being caught at a house in Nakhon Sawan on Nov 11.

The court approved the police request to detain the suspect.

Mr Kamtan did not apply to be released on bail. He was later taken to the Thon Buri Remand Prison.

The suspect, a taxi driver, earlier admitted attacking her in a fit of jealousy. He claimed the woman had become involved with two men.

According to media reports, the suspect recently married the 38-year-old victim and he was accused of pouring acid into her mouth and on her face in a fit of jealousy.

The woman's 12-year-old daughter rushed her by taxi for treatment, directing the driver to Bangmod Hospital in Chom Thong district. The driver instead took them to Praram 2 Hospital, a private hospital in Bang Khun Thien district, saying it was much closer and her condition was clearly serious.

Staff at Praram 2 Hospital later called a taxi to take the victim and her daughter to Bangmod Hospital. Chorlada reportedly died on the way.

The body of the woman arrived at her family's home in Waeng Yai district, Khon Kaen province on Tuesday for funeral rites.
