A school in Nan province has made a U-turn on an order forcing students to wear only school sweaters to keep themselves warm during the cold season.

Somphet Ngamthura, the director of Sa School, said on Tuesday he would soon scrap the order to avoid misunderstanding.

The order was criticised for curbing the right of students and the school in Sa district was questioned for trying to pocket money from students from selling sweaters with the school logo.

The school announced on Monday that students must wear only sweaters carrying the school emblem to maintain order. The wrong sweaters will be seized and later returned on the same day for first-time violation. If it happens again, the student's parents will also be asked to meet teachers at the school. For third-time violation, the sweaters would be kept at the school for the entire semester, in addition to talks between teachers and the parent.

The order, seen by the Bangkok Post, was signed by Mr Somphet.

The director chief denied the school wanted to make profits from selling the sweaters. It was issued with good intention so that students did not need to buy expensive clothes, he added.
