The city police on Thursday revealed their traffic management plan for the "Bike Un Ai Rak" cycling event on Sunday, involving the temporary closure of 25 main roads in Bangkok.

Among the roads that will be closed during the event are Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue, Ratchadamnoen Nok Avenue, Ratchadamnoen Nai Avenue, Charoen Krung Road and Suk Sawat Road, said Pol Maj Gen Jirasan Kaeosaeng-ek, deputy chief of the Metropolitan Police Bureau.

As such, cyclists who plan to bring their own bicycles to the event are advised to opt for the train, BTS skytrain and/or the MRT, he said.

For those who really have to travel by car, a total of 76 carparks with a combined capacity of 20,760 cars will be prepared near the nine registration spots, he said.

Four traffic police teams will be put on standby to help participants who encounter problems while travelling to the event," he said.

Sakon Rongsawat, Bangkok Mass Transit Authority's (BMTA) assistant director for bus operations, said the BMTA will provide free bus services on 15 routes between 7am and 9pm on Sunday to ferry the participants to and from the event.

The free routes consist of 11 shuttle services and four special services on ad hoc routes, he said, adding that sufficient parking space will be provided at the shuttle services' points of origin, such as CentralPlaza WestGate in Nonthaburi.

Meanwhile, Witthaya Yamuang, a marine transport adviser for the Transport Ministry, said that those who must travel by boat will be provided with free ferry services from Tha Chang and Wang Lang piers from 6am to 9pm on Sunday.

Furthermore, the department plans to work with the operator of the Chao Phraya Express Boat service to provide additional boat shuttle services for cyclists from Than Nam Non pier in Nonthaburi to Wat Rat Singkhon pier in Bangkok from 9am until 7pm, he said.

For safety reasons, cargo barges will be prohibited from travelling along the Chao Phraya River between Pak Khlong Bang Lamphu and Pak Khlong Dao Khanong, from midday until 10pm, he said.

Six special trains will be operated to help transport participating cyclists into inner Bangkok from the provinces for the event, he said.

Two trains will come from Ayutthaya, two services will run from Chachoengsao and two other services will run from Nakhon Pathom.
