TAK: A section of the Tak-Mae Hong Son highway was blocked to vehicles for about four hours on Sunday morning after a heavy rainstorm brought down a large tree.

The tree, about 100 years old, crashed onto the road at a spot between Tak's Tha Song Yang and Mae Hong Son's Mae Sariang districts. The tree also brought down electricity posts and cables, completely blocking the highway and causing tailbacks of lorries and private cars for several kilometres in both directions.

A large number of soldiers, rangers and highway and forestry officials were mobilised to clear the highway.

Some traffic resumed after about four hours, but only small trucks and private cars could squeeze through.

Authorities continued operations to clear the large tree and the felled power posts to reopen the highway to all vehicles.
