KHON KAEN: A female Chinese student, 23, had been dead four days before her body was discovered at a local dormitory on Sunday, and was believed to have been taking weight-loss medication, police said on Monday.

Pol Lt Col Adisak Ngamchat, deputy chief of Muang Khon Kaen station, said an initial autopsy concluded that Liu Rong died of a heart attack about four days before being found. Police found packets of weight-loss medication in the room with her.

"Her close friend said she was concerned about her appearance and did not want to be fat. So, she ordered the medication from Bangkok. The friend did not know how long she had been taking it or if the drug had caused her death," he said.

Relatives had not questioned the cause of death and had arrived in Khon Kaen to take her body back to China, Pol Lt Col Adisak said.

Liu studied at Khon Kaen University and her room lease expired on Nov 30. She was scheduled to return to China on Dec 17 and had extended her stay at the dormitory until Monday, he said.
